Chances are you’ve listened to a song produced by platinum engineer Patrizio “Teezio” Pigliapoco and you did not even know it.

Ever heard of “Freaky Friday”, “Easy”, or “Go Crazy” by Chris Brown?

If you’re like 10s of millions of people around the world, then you have heard a song produced by Patrizio.

Teezio is an expert audio engineer who has worked with R&B and Hip-Hop heavyweights like Justin Beiber, Future, and Nicki Minaj.

Teezio has always been at the forefront of hip-hop and major fashion since the late 2000s.

As the founder of Leave Normal Behind, I am always speaking with individuals who are becoming the best version of themselves, creating things that matter, and encouraging others to do the same.

Teezio is someone who is leaving normal behind and creating an impact in his industry.

I asked Teezio What does Leave Normal Behind mean to you” and he responded, “Exploring new territories by thinking about what you know and applying it. Not letting yourself be boxed in by what everyone else thinks. Do things that are new, fresh, and true to you.”

In his conversation on Pensado’s Place with hosts NAMM TEC Hall of Fame Inductees David Pensado and Herb Trawick, Pigliapoco discussed the key turning points in his career working big stars like Three Six Mafia, Fergie, and becoming Chris Brown’s recording engineer after a stroke of fate. Teezio talks about the relationship and administrative work that goes into having success with A-list artists like Chris Brown.

In this article I will share 5 Ways that you can go from “Good” to “Great”.

Teezio acknowledges his title as a recording engineer but describes the extra efforts that’s required of him in order to coordinate with producers and record labels to get tracks, beats, and samples cleared for final mixing. He gladly embraces this project management beyond the studio because as he states, “there are only five or six of the top artists in the world and so in this position there’s not alot of them. If you’re not willing to go the extra step, there’s ten other people that are.” Teezio knows the game is more than just what you can do in a recording studio.

He believes that one way you can create momentum is by setting clear short-term goals that you can accomplish in a measurable way. When you create reachable goals you allow yourself to experience the “win” of accomplishing your goal. Once you accomplish a goal simply set a new and improved goal for you to replicate the process of achievement.

This is the best way to grow.

In addition, never stop learning. The moment that you stop learning is the moment that you start to die. You have to be open to learning, never close your mind.

Here are 5 ways that you can separate yourself from others and go from “good” to “great”:

1. Have a sense of urgency about everything.

  • Decision makers and big time celebrities want things fast.
  • When you provide things quickly people are impressed with your work and you are given more opportunities.
  • You can control your effort therefore be urgent and eager in your service, people like that.

2. Always be ahead of the bullet.

  • Think through things all the way. Spot problems before they arise, anticipate them, and provide the solution yourself.
  • Doing this shows that you are trustworthy and thinking ahead of everyone. It shows that you are serious about your craft and you have a full understanding of what needs to be done and how to do it.

3. Learn to deal with big personalities and their energy.

  • Know when to speak more, and speak less. You must be able to read the room and understand the appropriate way to speak and act that is authentic to you.
  • You must have a high emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is the ability to read others emotions, read & manage your own emotions, and then act accordingly in the most beneficial way.

4. Go above and beyond.

  • Do the extra stuff. Go the extra mile. Be on call 24/7. This is something that separates “Good” and “Great”.
  • Here is a great quote that shares a fundamental truth about life and work, “How you do anything is how you do everything.”

5. Make a career about service as an adjunct to your skill set.

  • In addition to your craftsmanship, take pride in the way that you serve others. Always provide more value than you take in payment. This is one of the laws of value. Develop this habit.
  • When a guy is the runner for the coffee you have to be the best. If you are the food getter, be the best food getter and the fastest . “How you do anything is how you do everything”. Always the same amount of work no matter what.
  • Never do things half-assed. Show people that you’re willing to do all the work.

If you are able to implement these fundamentals you will experience immediate benefits in your life and business.

Teezio has used these fundamentals to become a 3x Grammy-nominated engineer and trail blaze in his industry.

Use them to your benefit and leave normal behind.
